Foods That Kill Testosterone Levels

There are so many things we love to eat and drink.  There’s a few foods that help increase testosterone, but there are also many foods that lower testosterone cells, and those are cells you definitely don’t want to lose voluntarily.

As men age, their testosterone their levels drop 1% after 30.  After 40, men lose between 1.5-3% each year. Not something to look forward to is it?  I’ve listed the 10 foods that not only affect you mentally and physically, but also effect you sexually.

1. ALCOHOL

It’s ok to have a beer or cocktail here and there.  But excessive alcohol consumption can destroy your testosterone levels in more ways than one.  For one, alcohol has lots of calories, especially when it’s mixed with sugary sodas.  Too much sugar is bad for your waistline, therefore lowering your testosterone.  Secondly, alcohol is a depressant and inhibits a man’s ability to become erect, keep erect, and achieve orgasm.  Too much alcohol causes inability to reach orgasm in women too.

2.  SOFT DRINKS (BOTH REGULAR AND DIET)

If you care about your testosterone, you should also care about your weight.  Soft drinks are loaded with sugar and empty calories, which cause an increase in fat.  The more weight you gain, the more estrogen you’ll promote, therefore decreasing testosterone. This includes energy drinks, flavored coffee and fruit juices. Diet soda is also dangerous because it contains artificial sweeteners like Aspartame.  Aspartame is known for lowering serotonin levels, causing lower sexual desire for both men and women.  I also need to add that those plastic bottles most of these drinks are packaged in are mostly made with phthalates that secrete estrogen-like chemicals.

3.  FOODS WITH HORMONES

Foods with hormones:  meat, poultry, eggs, cheese and most dairy foods contain hormones to increase harvest and milk, and preservatives and antibiotics to prevent and fight disease the animals may have.  The worst type of meats and dairy products are found in fast food establishments.  Most of time fast food meat and eggs are very low quality and tend to be cooked in a lot of grease.  The chemicals in all of these products cause hormonal imbalances, caused from estrogen, which ultimately lowers testosterone.  If you’re going to eat meat and dairy products, make sure it’s organic, free-range and grass-fed.

4.  LICORICE

This may be on the list of the worst tasting candies in the world.  Little do most people know, licorice is routinely used in many teas, sweets, and chewing gum.  The problem is licorice contains the compound Glycyrrhizin.  A study that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which had researchers test Glycyrrhizin on six normal males, ages 22-24 years of age, and they found a great decrease in testosterone levels only consuming 7g of licorice for a period of 7 days.  After the 4th day, their total testosterone decreased from 740 ng/dL to 848 ng/dL. http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM199910073411515

5.  TRANS-FATS

Many of the delicious-tasting cookies, cakes, muffins, doughnuts, potato chips, and most fast foods, all contain “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated” vegetable oils, which are highly processed.  Not only are Trans-Fats dangerous for your arteries.  But they add weight to your mid-section, as is proven to destroy testosterone production.  The FDA plans to abolish Trans-Fat from food by 2018.

6.  SUGAR

Not only does sugar make you fat. It also lowers testosterone levels. Even consuming too many carbohydrates, which converts into glucose, effects testosterone the same way.  Sugar releases the hormone insulin, which causes more belly fat, which raises estrogen levels. This leads to lower testosterone levels, lower sex drive and erectile dysfunction.

7.  SPEARMINT AND PEPPERMINT

You can usually find these mints in many toothpastes, soaps, shampoo, lip ointments, and teas.  These herbs may be good for your breath, but bad for your testosterone.  No studies have been done on human males, but a study was done by researchers on 21 human females.  Each were given 1 cup of spearmint tea for 5 consecutive days, and their free testosterone levels decreased by 30%. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17310494

8.  YOUR MEDICATION

This may not be a food, but it goes down into your stomach and digests the same.  All medications, street drugs included, have side effects.  But the pills that affect your sex drive the most are antidepressants and other types of meds like Aderall and birth control pills.  The list of Testosterone-decreasing meds is Statins, Beta Blockers and hypertension medications, Opioids, Anti-anxiety and recreational drugs.  All these medications disrupt your body’s natural serotonin, dopamine and epinephrine levels, leaving your testosterone level to suffer.  Click here for the Top 6 Testosterone Boosters.
